Osteoporosis Screening

All women over the age of 65, and those who have risk factors at an earlier age, must be screened for Osteoporosis.  One of the main ways of screening for this disease that causes the bones to thin and break easily is via DEXA scan (short for dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry).

DEXA scan looks at the bone density in the hips and spine to determine the risk for fractures.  Regular screening can also detect osteopenia, an early stage of the disease, when the patient is determined to have lower-than-normal bone density.
